Applications Sought for Editor of the JER
APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR EDITOR OR CO-EDITORS OF THE JOURNAL OF THE EARLY REPUBLIC
Dear Members of SHEAR,
With tremendous gratitude for their splendid service and labor, I write to let you know that Johann Neem and Ronald Angelo Johnson will be stepping down as co-editors of the Journal of the Early Republic when their term ends at the 2026 conference. The journal has thrived under the leadership of Johann and Ron, and issue after issue we have all benefitted from their commitment and devotion to scholarship, to scholars, and to publishing work that meets the highest standards and explains the rich complexity and critical importance of the history of the early American republic. Thank you, Johann! And thank you, Ron!
Their decision to step down provides an opportunity for other members of SHEAR to continue these crucial efforts and to work with scholars to publish the strongest versions of their ideas. Attached please find a full description of the position. If you are interested in being considered for the position of editor of the JER, please send a letter of interest and a CV to Andy Shankman at shankman@rutgers.edu. In your letter, please discuss the reason for your interest and your ideas for the future success of the journal. We welcome individual letters but are also quite interested in applications from duos proposing to serve as co-editors. If applying as a duo, you need only send one letter with your two CVs. If you have any questions about the search process do feel free to contact Andy. If you have any questions about the job of editing the journal, also feel free to contact Johann, Ron, or Andy, any or all of them will be happy to address your questions about the job of editor. If you are unsure about whether your institution can provide the institutional backing on which the Journal’s work rests, Andy will be happy to talk to you about what that backing entails.
Please send you letter and CV to Andy Shankman at shankman@rutgers.edu by Monday, November 3, 2025.
Yours sincerely,
Carolyn Eastman,
President of SHEAR
