AI Policy

The Journal of the Early Republic discourages the use of artificial intelligence in material submitted to the Journal or The Pano, including original manuscripts and book reviews. We adhere to the policy of our publisher, UNC Press, which states that “readers can trust that UNC Press books and journal articles are the original work of our authors. The Press does not consider AI-generated content such as text from large language models to meet the standard of authorship and does not accept it for publication.” The Journal prohibits manuscript readers from using AI while reviewing a manuscript submission, including uploading any texts for summarization.

If an author or reviewer uses AI for any other purposes in the preparation of their submission, we require complete transparency about its use. Use of standard grammar, punctuation, and spell-check features through Word and other word processors, which flag areas for an author to review and manually make changes, need not be disclosed. Utilizing assistive AI tools (such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.) that reformulate existing text, generate new text, restructure arguments, or help analyze data must be disclosed. Authors are required to explicitly detail any AI usage on submission forms and within manuscript citations.
